What Kind of Mahjong Player Are You? The Five Players You'll Find at Every Club

Anjalyn Rosevear

Spend enough time in American mahjong circles and you'll notice something: the same characters show up everywhere. Palm Beach, Park City, the North Shore, your cousin's book club turned mahjong group. The faces change. The energy does not.

See if you recognize anyone.

The Strategist

She had the new card memorized before most of us finished unwrapping ours. She tracks every discard, reads the table like a novel, and will absolutely clock when someone is chasing a hand she has no business chasing. She's not unkind about it. She just knows.

You'll hear her say: "Mm. I think someone's in Winds."

Her superpower: defense. She almost never throws the winning tile.

The Social Butterfly

She's here for the tiles and the talk, in roughly equal measure. She may or may not know exactly which hand she's going for at any given moment, but she knows everyone at the table and half the room, and the afternoon is undeniably better because she came.

You'll hear her say: "Wait, whose turn is it? Anyway, did you hear about..."

Her superpower: she's the reason the group stays together for twenty years.

The Serious Beginner

She started six months ago. Since then she's bought two sets, joined a weekly game, started a group chat, and quietly practiced every night. She's going to be very good at this. Honestly, she already kind of is.

You'll hear her say: "Can I ask a quick question about the rule for..."

Her superpower: she improves faster than anyone at the table.

The Veteran

She's been playing since before most of the table was born. She has opinions about the card, the tiles, the Charleston, and the state of the game in general. She is usually right. She has earned it.

You'll hear her say: "Back when the card had..."

Her superpower: a joker exchange you never saw coming.

The Hostess

She's the reason this table exists. She found the mat, chose the snacks, organized the invite list, texted the sub, and made sure everyone had a seat. The game lives and dies by her, she knows it, and she loves it.

You'll hear her say: "Okay, who's bringing a set Thursday?"

Her superpower: turning a game into a community.

Every Table Needs All Five

The Strategist keeps everyone sharp. The Social Butterfly keeps it fun. The Serious Beginner keeps it growing. The Veteran keeps it honest. The Hostess keeps it happening.

Most of us are at least two of them. (Strategist on a good day, Social Butterfly after the second spritz.)

So tell us: which one are you?
