Five Cocktails Worth Serving at Your Next Mahjong Night

Anjalyn Rosevear

A great mahjong night deserves a great drink menu. Not whatever's lurking in the back of the fridge. An actual, thoughtfully chosen lineup that matches the energy of the table: something bubbly for the Charleston, something a little bolder once the wall gets short.

Here are our five favorites, plus a zero-proof option that's every bit as pretty. One house rule before we start: drinks live on a side table, not next to the racks. Nothing ends a hand faster than a spritz across the tiles.

1. The Aperol Spritz: For the Hostess

Light, bubbly, and the exact shade of orange that makes everyone feel like they're on vacation. (It's also our unofficial house color here at Bird Bam.)

How to make it: Fill a wine glass with ice. Add 3 oz prosecco, 2 oz Aperol, and a 1 oz splash of soda water. Garnish with an orange slice. That's the classic 3-2-1, and it's nearly impossible to mess up.

Hostess hack: Batch the Aperol and prosecco in a pitcher and top each glass with soda so the bubbles stay lively.

2. The Paloma: For the Player Who Stays Cool Under Pressure

Crisp, tart, a little salty. She never flinches when someone exposes a quint.

How to make it: Salt half the rim of a highball glass. Add ice, 2 oz blanco tequila, and ½ oz fresh lime juice. Top with grapefruit soda. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

3. The Champagne Cocktail: For the Big Win

Reserve this one for when someone finally lands the hand she's been chasing for three games straight. It's a celebration in a coupe.

How to make it: Drop a sugar cube into a flute or coupe and soak it with 2 to 3 dashes of Angostura bitters. Top slowly with chilled champagne or dry sparkling wine. Finish with a lemon twist.

4. The Moscow Mule: For the Most Competitive Player at the Table

Spicy, bracing, and served in copper. You know exactly who this is for.

How to make it: Fill a copper mug with ice. Add 2 oz vodka and ½ oz fresh lime juice, then top with 4 oz ginger beer. Garnish with a lime wheel and a sprig of mint.

5. The French 75: For the Veteran

Elegant, a little strong, and absolutely timeless. Just like the woman who's been playing since before the rest of the table was born.

How to make it: Shake 1 oz gin, ½ oz fresh lemon juice, and ½ oz simple syrup with ice. Strain into a flute and top with 2 to 3 oz champagne. Lemon twist to finish.

Bonus: The Botanical Spritz (Zero Proof)

For the designated driver, the early riser, or anyone who simply wants something beautiful in her glass without the alcohol.

How to make it: Fill a wine glass with ice. Add 2 oz of a non-alcoholic bitter aperitif or botanical spirit, top with 3 oz sparkling water or NA sparkling wine, and add a squeeze of lemon. Garnish with a rosemary sprig and a citrus wheel.

Set the Bar (Literally)

  • Serve on a tray with pretty cocktail napkins and a little card naming each drink.
  • Pre-batch what you can so you're not playing bartender mid-Charleston.
  • Keep sparkling water flowing. Four hours of mahjong is a marathon.
  • Stemless or short glasses are much harder to knock over when someone reaches for a discard.

Cheers to good tiles, better company, and a signature drink your friends will ask about all week.

Please enjoy responsibly, and always make sure everyone has a safe way home.
