Their Story

Dear Mahjong Instructor: Bird Bam Was Built With You in Mind

Anjalyn Rosevear

If you teach American mahjong, you know this moment well.

A student has a breakthrough in class. She leaves glowing. And the following week she sits down having forgotten half of it. Not because she didn't try, but because there was nothing to practice with in between.

That's the gap Bird Bam was built to fill.

What Your Students Get Between Lessons

  • Daily Rack: a fresh rack, the current card, and one job: pick the section it's heading toward. Bammie, our AI coach, grades the read and explains what she might have missed.
  • Charleston Practice: pass after pass, with coaching on what to keep and what to release. It's the part of the game beginners find most intimidating.
  • Discard Practice: choose a discard and learn whether it was the best play, a reasonable one, or a costly one, and why.
  • Pivot Practice: the mid-game "commit or switch?" decisions where students lose confidence fastest.
  • Ask Bammie: for the questions that pop up at 10pm when you're (rightfully) not answering texts.

These are the skills you already teach. Bird Bam gives your students a way to rep them daily, on their own, without a table or three other players.

What It Means for Your Classes

Students who practice between sessions arrive better prepared. They ask sharper questions. They retain more and progress faster, which means they stay engaged longer, sign up for the next series, and bring their friends.

And because Bird Bam is built on the current NMJL card, students who use it show up already familiar with this year's hands. You spend less time re-establishing the basics and more time teaching the good stuff.

Coming Soon: Bird Bam Clubs

We're building Clubs with teachers and organizers front of mind. Here's what's planned:

  • Your own club page with your contact info and upcoming classes, open games, and events
  • Local discovery: new players share their location when they sign up, and we'll match them with clubs nearby, including yours
  • RSVPs and game coordination in one place. No more text-chain chaos, no more hunting through messages to see who confirmed or who's bringing a set
  • A home for your students after the lesson ends, so a one-time student has a clear path back to your next series or open game

Clubs will be free for members to join. Organizers will run them with The Hostess membership. Payments for your classes stay with you, handled however you already handle them.

Grows With the Card

Every spring when the new NMJL card arrives, Bird Bam updates to match. The card you're teaching from is the card Bammie coaches from.

Your Seat Is Safe

Bird Bam isn't trying to sit across the table from your students. That seat is yours. We want to be the thing they reach for on a Tuesday afternoon when there's no class and no table and they want to get better anyway, and, soon, the thing that sends new students your way.
